Preparing for Hurricane Season

  • Establish a family disaster plan and stock your disaster supply kit.
  • If you are not in an evacuation zone, identify a safe room in your home.
  • Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio with a tone alert feature, on which you can receive warnings issue by the local National Weather Service office.

What You Should Do When A Watch or Warning Is Issued

  • When a HURRICANE WATCH is issued for your area, you could experience hurricane conditions within 36 hours.  Secure your home, bring in or anchor all outdoor belongings, and activate your family disaster plan.  If you are planning to evacuate, make arrangements for someone to keep your pet(s) until you return.

  • When a HURRICANE WARNING is issued for your area you should expect hurricane-force winds within 24 hours. Complete your advance preparations immediately and be ready to move your family to a safe room or alternate location to ride out the storm.
